Explanations For panFora Installation

     Web server's Document Root directory

To successfully install and configure panFora for operation with your current active web server, you must know the web servers'document root directory.
This is the directory on your web server from which the server retrieves the default root file.

  • index.html
in response to a URL request of
  • http://your-hostname.domain/

Example:

  • Let us assume that the web server responds to a URL request by sending the file located at /usr/local/apache/htdocs/index.html.

Then /usr/local/apache/htdocs is the web server's Document Root directory.

     Read, write and execute permission

panFora's program and data files must be installed within a file directory area that can be presented by the web server.
For most installations, the ideal location is a subdirectory under the Root web directory.

In order to complete such an installation, you must have:

  • Read, write and execute privileges to the web server 's Document Root directory.
  • ability to create and populate subdirectories there.
  • ability to modify permissions to enable the active web server to create subdirectories and write to the subdirectories in the web document area.
  • Obtaining root or super-user privileges to installing panFora greatly simplifies this task.

Web server configuration file location and modification privileges

To ensure correct operation, the web server configuration must match the panFora installation.
For typical apache web server v1.3.x installations, the following files must be modified and the web server must be restarted:

  • /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf

  • /usr/local/apache/conf/srm.conf

  • /usr/local/apache/conf/access.conf

Where to find the Apache configuration files:

  • Default Apache Install from Source Code:
       /usr/local/apache/conf

  • Red Hat Linux
       /etc/httpd/conf

  • Mandrake Linux
       /home/httpd/conf

  • Slackware Linux
       /var/lib/apache/conf/

     Desired install location for panFora

This is where panFora will ultimately reside. This can be inside a subdirectory of the root web directory, or in any other existing directory that is accessible via a web server's aliased path.

Location of downloaded panFora distribution file

This is the location of the distribution file received or downloaded from wiTHinc. Typically it will have a filename like panFora-1.3-i386-linux-xxxx.tgz where 1.3 is the version id, i386 is the processor family, and linux is the computer operating system platform.

     Path to PERL executable

panFora's installation procedure and panFora's administrator web interface require PERL.
A recent version of PERL must be installed prior to installing panFora.
You must know the location of the installed PERL interpreter program.
On many unix systems, its location is /usr/bin/perl or /usr/local/bin/perl.

     Path to sendmail executable

panFora must know the location of the sendmail (or equivalent) program executable to send email notifications.
On many unix systems, its location is /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail.

Web server process Owner ID and Group ID

You will need the Web Server's process Owner ID (User ID) and Group ID so that the appropriate read/write/execute file ownership and permissions can be specified for panFora.
